Intro Cutscene and Briefing[]
(Sam, Lambert and Grim are looking at a screen:)
Sam: So Zherkezhi and Morgenholt are the only two people who ever saw those algorithms.
Lambert: And Morgenholt is dead, and Zherkezhi is connected to a mystery guest we know nothing about.
Grim: Dvorak.
Sam: Morgenholt and Zherkezhi are geeks, not terrorists. Maybe this Dvorak is some kind of puppeteer.
(TV showing a baseball game)
Commentator: No-hitter, bottom of the eighth, 2-0. New York in the eighth.
Announcer: Akira Watanabe is on the mound. Pure concentration, pure focus.
(As Watanabe pitches, a blackout occurs)
(A total blackout occurs all over New York.)
Lambert: This is no coincidence. (to Sam) You're on your way to the Big Apple.
Colonel Lambert: Bruce Morgenholt and Abrahim Zherkezhi were partnered together on Project Watson the UN Committee that cracked the Masse kernels. They're the ones who discovered Five-Twelve encryption, the same encryption used in the messages you recovered at MCAS Bank. If this so-called "Dvorak" person has somehow gotten his hands on Masse-based IW algos, we're in a world of hurt.
Anna Grimsdottir: I've been trying to penetrate Zherkezhi's private networks since we connected him to this mess. I've seen some tough network security before, and I expected Zherkezhi to have top of the line tech, but this is crazy. Zherkezhi's server isn't just impenetrable or invisible... it's like... it's like looking for a shadow in a pitch black room.. it's driving me crazy...
William Redding: Things are turning sour in New York. It's been 24 hours since the blackout and no one has a clue when it might end. We've got sporadic reports of unrest all over Manhattan, but it hasn't started to spill over yet. World coming down from above is that the National Guard will be deployed within the hour. We'll need to insert you into an alley behind a building adjacent to the target building. Watch out for civilians. In Game[]
Lambert: Fisher... the National Guard was deployed into Manhattan about an hour ago.
Sam: I feel safer already.
Lambert: Watch your fire Sam. Those boys aren't expecting to see you and they'll attack on sight. Do not... I repeat, do not kill any of them.
Sam: I'll be careful.
Lambert: Good.
Civilians killed[]
(Note: If two civilians are killed, all unfinished secondary, opportunity and bonus objectives are cancelled and all related dialogues skipped. Third Echelon dialogue may be different; differences are marked as "2 civilians killed". Unlike full alert, NPC conversations in general are not cancelled.)
(The National Guard members count as civilians.)
Lambert: Sweet Jesus Fisher... what did you do?
Sam: It was an accident.
Lambert: We don't have room for accidents. Watch your fire.
Lambert: Dammit Fisher... that's the second civilian you've killed.
Sam: Lambert... I...
Lambert: Save the whining for your evaluation. Complete your primary objectives and forget the rest. You're a hazard.
Sam: Roger.Outside area - ground level[]
(As Sam advances, a guard walks towards another to talk:)
Guard 1: You have enough light down here?
Guard 2: I think so. These barricade lights are battery operated so they should be OK. I have flares too if I need them.
Guard 1: All right. Then we'll concentrate on getting power to the CP before we break out to the perimeter.
Guard 2: Sounds good.
(If Sam grabs a guard, he can interrogate him.)
Sam: Stay calm. We're on the same side.
Guard : Jesus, who are you?
Sam: I'm the monster in the closet and I'm gonna let you go back to sleep as soon as you tell me how many men you have deployed out here.
Guard : T-there's just eight of us and a squad, but there are more on the roof.
Sam: How many?
Guard : I don't know, I swear.
Sam: Thanks for the intel.
(additional interrogation)
Guard : I'm just an ordinary guy. Please! (OR) I'm not even a soldier. I work in a hardware store.Inside the building[]
Lambert: Fisher... looks like the National Guard are trying to restore the power to the building's elevator. That's probably your best way to the top.
Sam: I'll see if I can hitch a ride.
Lambert: It'll be a long climb if you don't.Lambert: Fisher, the elevator is the only way to the roof.
(The guard repairing the elevator talks to another guard.)
Guard 3: What's the status on that elevator?
Guard 4: I'll have it running in a sec.
Guard 3: Well speed it up. We need to get some more equipment up to the roof.
Guard 4: I'm going as fast as I can.
(If Sam grabs a guard, he can interrogate him.)
Sam: Shh. I'm not going to hurt you.
Guard : W-who are you? Wait a minute, is this a training exercise?
Sam: Oh, damn. (Sam fakes a radio call) Support, this guy knows it's a training exercise. Who let the cat out of the bag?
Guard : Huh, I knew it.
Sam: Roger that. Yeah, OK. (to the guard) Give me a hand here pal, just play along. Name, rank and number.
Guard : Corporal Stan Donlin. Twenty-four, twenty-eight, nine-nine-six.
Sam: And you're not gonna tell me anything else.
Guard : No sir.
Sam: Good boy. (fake radio call) All right, want me to move on to the next one? Yeah... Roger... huh... OK... I'll ask. (to the guard) Command wants to know how many are on the roof.
Guard : Two on the roof sir. Two more inbound in a chopper.
Sam: Thanks. Dismissed.
(additional interrogation)
Guard : Well, am I dismissed or not? (OR) Wait a minute! This isn't an exercise! Who are you!?(Sam either climbs up the elevator shaft and the elevator starts operating again, or waits for the elevator to be fixed and takes it up. He gets past a guard and goes out to the roof. There is one guard on the roof. A helicopter lands and two more guards come out.)
Guard 5: Well you know what I can't figure out, like the entire city is dark, right?
Guard 6: Yeah?
Guard 5: But this guy over here, oh his lights are on. How can that be?
Guard 6: Well the richer you get, the more paranoid you get. Guy probably has his own generator so he can keep his security system running.
Guard 5: Security system!? Who's going to climb 15 floors to break into his apartment?
Guard 6: Like I said, paranoid.
(Sam grabs a zipline towards the penthouse)
(the following dialogue is skipped completely if two civilians were killed)
Lambert: Fisher, satellite shows you've reached Zherkezhi's building. County Clerk's office has construction permits on file for the floors below the penthouse and in the neighboring structure.
Sam: Any plans or blueprints on file?
Lambert: I'll have Grim look into it, but with this blackout...
Sam: I understand... I'll see if I can dig up some plans down here.
Lambert: Good idea.
Penthouse[]
Lambert: Fisher, that's a hired gun if I've ever seen one.
Sam: He's no night watchman either... he's a merc. He's got the same kit as the guys who were protecting Lacerda.
Lambert: This whole situation is getting uglier by the second. See if you can find out who these characters work for.
Sam: Will do.Lambert: Fisher, these guys are mercenaries. Find out who they work for.
Penthouse alarms[]
(Note: If four alarms are triggered in the mission, all unfinished secondary, opportunity and bonus objectives are cancelled and all related dialogues skipped. Most NPC conversations are skipped. Third Echelon dialogue may be different; differences are marked as "Full Alert".)
Lambert: Fisher, looks like Zherkezhi has his own alarm system. Careful.
Lambert: I'm serious Sam... too many alarms and these mercenaries will be after you.
Lambert: Fisher... I'm not kidding around. One more alarm and you'll be in big trouble.
Lambert: Dammit, Sam. They called a general alarm... you're going to have to battle your way through now. Complete your primary objectives and get out of there!
(The penthouse will be on full alert.)Primary Objective: Find out who the mercenaries work for[]
(The objective can be completed by interrogating any interrogable penthouse merc. Provided the objective has not yet been completed, the following dialogue is added to the end of an interrogation:)
Sam: Since you're doing so well why don't you tell me the name of the PMC you work for.
Merc: I-I work for Displace. Displace International.
(The objective can also be completed by listening to one of two NPC conversations, or by accessing the computer after the mag-locked door. When the objective is completed:)
Lambert: Displace? That's Doug Shetland's company.
Sam: I know.
Lambert: Fisher, if Shetland turns out to be crooked...
Sam: If Shetland is crooked, I'll take him down myself, but I have a feeling there's more to it than that.
(The continuation below only occurs if not on full alert or two civilians killed. In this case, the secondary objective is made available:)
Lambert: Could be. See if you can find out who's in charge of this protection detail. Maybe someone inside Displace is playing both sides.
Sam: You got it.
Penthouse lower floor[]
(Sam infiltrates the lower floor of the penthouse. There is a merc walking on a balcony. Inside there are two mercs who have a conversation.)
Merc 1: How much longer is this gonna take?
Merc 2: It'll be done when it's done.
Merc 1: Done when it's done? What kind of answer is that?
Merc 2: Hey I got a 220 connection here at 16 amps.
Merc 1: So?
Merc 2: So you know what kind of juice will do to you if the wires get crossed?
Merc 1: Uh, no?
Merc 2: Well here. Touch right here and find out.
Merc 1: Uh, no thanks.
Merc 2: Yeah good thinking. Now get lost. It'll be done when it's done.
(Merc 2 will eventually partially repair the elevator door so it opens, although the elevator itself is halfway down the door and doesn't move. Sam can use this as a shortcut to the middle floor.)
(Sam can interrogate any of these three penthouse mercs.)
Sam: What are you doing down here?
Merc: Ah! Who the hell?
Sam: Off to a bad start. Talk or die.
Merc: Agh! OK! We run VIP protection. This floor, we need to secure it because we can't walk it off from the penthouse.
Sam: Does the architect or engineer keep an office or a desk down here?
Merc: Yeah, of course! West side of the building.
(additional interrogation)
Merc: If you're gonna kill me, do it quick. (OR) You're messing with the wrong company pal.(Sam can either take a shortcut to the middle floor if the elevator is partially repaired, or else continue along the lower floor towards the room with the architectural plan computer.)
Generic interrogation dialogues[]
(The following interrogations are available for some mercs in the penthouse. These dialogues can occur multiple times. Interrogation 1 can occur with the sleeping merc near the architectural plans computer, the merc on the balcony in the middle floor, and the merc in the greenhouse that stays after the conversation. Interrogation 2 can occur with the merc sitting on the bed on the middle floor, and the merc in the greenhouse that leaves after the conversation. The VIP protection detail interrogations, if they come into effect, override these interrogations.)
Sam: Like my new knife?
Merc: Oh God!
Sam: I've been using it quite a bit, is it still sharp?
Merc: Reals... sharp.
Sam: Maybe you better tell me something interesting before I get all distracted and slip.
Merc: Medical supplies. You'll probably want some medical supplies in the washroom beside the kitchen.
(additional interrogation)
Merc: Please, I told you all I know. (OR) I-I was gonna resign next week.
Sam: Pick a number between one and ten.
Merc: Uh, wha-? Oh, oh crap, uh, three!
Sam: Ugh, lucky guess. You get to live. Now tell me something useful or we'll play another round.
Merc: Oh God! Uh, the mag lock, the locked door to the roof.
Sam: What about it?
Merc: I-I think the computer that controls it is in the master bedroom on the top floor.
(additional interrogation)
Merc: Do you want me to pick again? Four... no no no wait, wait! Seven! (OR) I told you everything.Architectural plans computer room[]
(Sam can interrogate a merc here who always uses generic interrogation #1 above.)
(Sam can hack the computer to get the architectural plans. The following dialogue can occur even on full alert or when two civilians were killed. The dialogue is skipped if the mag-locked door is already unlocked.)
Grim: Hm... work permits, architectural plans... interesting... Zherkezhi has a hardened panic room off of his bedroom...
Sam: I'll check it out.
Grim: Looks like he also filed plans for construction in the next building over.
Sam: The next building?
Grim: I'm no architect, but if I'm reading these plans right, both buildings are connected across a rooftop. I'll leave the relevant data on your OPSAT. Should help you navigate.
Sam: Thanks.
Opportunity objective - Tap the penthouse cameras[]
(when Sam first comes across an infrared camera:)
Redding: Fisher... Zherkezhi's cameras project an infrared beam so they can see in the dark.
Sam: If it's an infrared beam, I can see it in my night vision.
Redding: Exactly... and listen... it would help us keep tabs on Zherkezhi if we could use these cameras against him.
Sam: Gotcha. I'll try and run some taps.
(Sam can tap the cameras. The dialogue depends on the number of cameras tapped so far.)
Redding: Good work Fisher. That's one camera tapped. There should be five more.
Sam: I'll keep my eyes open.
Redding: Good work Fisher. That's four of six cameras tapped.
Sam: I'll keep my eye out for the other two.
Redding: Good work on the cameras, Sam. We'll have guys watching Zherkezhi twenty-four-seven.
Sam: Always happy to keep the donut dippers busy.(if Sam destroys a camera with the sniper attachment, including after the objective was completed:)
Redding: Well that's not much help.
Sam: What?
Redding: I'd hoped to use those cameras to keep tabs on Zherkezhi... but we can forget that now.
Sam: Sorry. My mistake.
(the objective is cancelled and dialogues from this section are skipped:)
Mag-locked door[]
(Sam can tap the nearby camera. He goes up the stairs to the middle floor. There is a mag-locked door nearby. If Sam approaches it, a dialogue plays. The dialogue is skipped on full alert, or if two civilians were killed.)
Grim: Fisher, looks like Zherkezhi has these doors mag-locked on a remote switch. You'll need to find the computer that controls the magnetic lock.
Sam: Where would I find that?
Grim: It'll be somewhere inside the penthouse... you'll have to sniff around.
Grim: It's probably in that panic room he keeps hidden behind his bedroom.
Penthouse middle floor[]
(There is a merc sitting on a bed. Sam can interrogate the merc, who uses generic interrogation #2.)
(Two other mercs converse nearby.)
Merc 3: Hey, I don't recognize you. How long have you been with Displace?
Merc 4: Three months. I just got transferred up from Peru. I was on the, um, VIP detail down there.
Merc 3: Ah, so you're already, uh, in the loop.
Merc 4: Yeah, me and, uh, well, you know. We go way back.
Merc 3: Well stick with us. We know how to get things done.
Merc 4: I know. Like I say, we go way back.
Merc 3: Right.
(Sam can interrogate the balcony merc, Merc 4, for information on the VIP protection detail if the objective is available to be completed. If the objective is not available, already completed or cancelled, generic interrogation #1 will be used instead.)
Sam: Stay quiet. It's a long way down to the street.
Merc: Oh God! Please don't!
Sam: Sounds to me like you know who's in charge of VIP protection here.
Merc: Yeah, it's Nedich. Milan Nedich.
Sam: Is he in charge of the protection detail on Morgenholt in Peru as well?
Merc: Yeah, Milan handles all Displace VIP protection contracts.
Sam: Well he's not very good at it, is he?
Merc: Please don't throw me off this roof.
Sam: Wouldn't dream of it.
(additional interrogation)
Merc: I'm scared of heights. Please! (OR) I don't wanna die!(There is a camera on the balcony that Sam can tap. Sam goes through a hallway, and past some more mercs. There are two more cameras here that can be tapped.)
Penthouse top floor[]
(Sam goes up the stairs to the top floor to Zherkezhi's bedroom. There is a camera here to tap.)
Alternate objective - Obtain the missing transaction records[]
(If Sam did not complete the secondary objective from the Bank mission, he will need to access the computer here:)
(If not on full alert / 2 civilians killed:)
Lambert: That pretty much confirms it. These records show Zherkezhi has a long history of transactions with the MCAS Bank in Panama.
Sam: Is he the one who shipped the arms to Lacerda's goons?
Lambert: It doesn't matter much now. We'll need to bring him in for a chat either way.
(The continuation depends on which primary objectives are yet to be completed. The objective "Find out who the mercenaries work for" is ignored even if all other objectives are complete. In order of priority:)
Sam: Alright.
Sam: Where do I find him?
Lambert: We'll look into that, you still need to locate Dvorak.
Sam: Alright.
Sam: Where do I find him?
Lambert: We'll look into that, you still need to recover a data sample from Dvorak.
Sam: Alright.
Sam: Where do I find him?
Lambert: We'll look into that, you get yourself to extraction.
Sam: Alright.(If on full alert / 2 civilians killed, the following will always play instead.)
Lambert: That connects Zherkezhi to the MCAS Bank in Panama. Objective complete.
(Sam finds the entrance to the panic room.)
Zherkezhi's panic room[]
(Sam finds and uses the computer behind the bedroom that controls the mag lock:)
Grim: Gotcha.
Sam: Who?
Grim: Dvorak.
Sam: Where is he?
Grim: According to this, he's in the building next door. You can get there across the rooftop through the magnetically locked doors.
Sam: How do I get through the doors?
Grim: They're not magnetically locked anymore.
Sam: Thanks for the help.Grim: Dvorak is in the adjacent structure. I've unlocked the magnetic doors so you can cross the roof.
(Sam can now access the roof and the adjacent building.)
Greenhouse[]
(Sam can approach a greenhouse on the top floor. Two mercs behind the door are talking.)
Merc 5: How long have you known him?
Merc 6: A long time, long time. Since before Displace. Since before Bosnia.
Merc 5: Before Bosnia? Good lord, I knew he had connections, but, uh...
Merc 6: Yep, known him a long time. He treats us good, we do what he says.
Merc 5: Yes, yes well he sure treats us well.
Merc 6: Now you know too, now you work for him, do what he says.
Merc 5: Yes, well, certainly worth my while now, isn't it?
Merc 6: More than worth your while. It'll keep you alive, man.
(one of the mercs will then leave the room)
(Sam can interrogate either merc here for information on the VIP protection detail if the objective is available to be completed. If the objective is not available, already completed or cancelled, generic interrogation #1 will be used for the merc who stays in the room, and generic interrogation #2 for the merc who leaves the room.)
Sam: I'm allergic to flowers. Maybe you should talk before I sneeze and accidentally cut your throat.
Merc: Oh god. I'll tell you anything.
Sam: Good. Start with your boss. What's his name?
Merc: Nedich. Milan Nedich. He's in charge of all our VIP protection contracts.
Sam: And how many under his protection has he killed in the last, say, six weeks?
Merc: W-what?
Sam: What kind of scam is he running?
Merc: I-I don't know about any scam. I swear!
(additional interrogation)
Merc: Don't hurt me. I'm not as tough as I act. (OR) Don't tell Milan I gave you his name. He's psychotic.(Once Sam completes an interrogation for the VIP protection detail, the following dialogue plays:)
Grim: Milan Nedich... Echelon's got nothing... he doesn't even exist.
Sam: Hm... well whoever he is, he's playing both sides. We need to inform Shetland.
Grim: No can do, Sam. We can't compromise OPSEC for private interests.
Sam: Fine... but if I find Nedich, it will be less of a problem.
Grim: Admirable of you to protect your friend, but...
Sam: You said he doesn't exist... I'm just correcting a bureaucratic error.
(Sam can tap a camera in the greenhouse.)
Rooftop[]
(Sam goes through the mag-locked doors which are now unlocked. There is a merc on the roof who can be interrogated.)
Sam: What are you doing out here all by yourself?
Merc: Huh, guarding the roof.
Sam: From what?
Merc: Let me go and I'll show you.
Sam: Feisty one. How about I cut your ear off. See how tough you are then.
Merc: Go ahead, I have two.
Sam: How many men do you have out here?
Merc: I'm alone on this roof.
Sam: Alone, huh? Lousy way to die.
Merc: We all die alone.
(additional interrogation)
Merc: I know you're too scared to fight me fairly.(OR) Let me go and we'll see who's the strongest.
Nearby building[]
(Sam can enter the nearby building through the door, or through one of the windows passing by a wall mine. A merc near a computer can be interrogated.)
Sam: Nice place you got here. Decorated yourself.
Merc: Ugh, w-who are you?
Sam: Landlord. Rent's overdue.
Merc: Ugh, what do you want?
Sam: Where can I find Dvorak?
Merc: I-I don't know any Dvorak. If you mean Zherkezhi, he's gone.
(additional interrogation)
Merc: I-I'll do whatever you say. (OR) I've been tortured before. I'll cooperate!
Dvorak's room[]
(Sam bypasses some more mercs and finds his way into Dvorak's room. An old man is standing in the middle of the room.)
(If Sam uses the nearby machine and is unable to progress it:)
Sam: Lambert... what the hell is this thing?
Lambert: I have no idea Fisher... talk to the old man... maybe he knows something.
(From here, there are two main scenarios:)
Dvorak Scenario 1 - talk with Dvorak's keeper[]
(Sam talks to the man.)
(Note: This scenario is aborted if Sam kills or knocks out the man, or if Sam makes him angry by causing a disruption.)
Sam: You must be Dvorak.
Dvorak's keeper: Well, Dvorak, hm? I had thought this area was, well, off limits.
Sam: You're not Dvorak.
Dvorak's keeper: Well, um, seems we're being blunt, well, no.
Sam: Then who are you?
Dvorak's keeper: Such a rush you're in. Hm, fancy some tea, would you?
Sam: Lambert, something weird is happening.
Lambert: I'll say.
Sam: What do I do?
Lambert: The old man seems harmless. Indulge him. See if he knows anything.
Dvorak's keeper: Reminds me of poor old Jiggers. Ha ha ha. Oh, Jiggers, we hardly knew ye.
Sam: Who are you? What are you doing here?
Dvorak's keeper: Oh, well, one might ask you the same.
Sam: I'm looking for a man named Dvorak.
Dvorak's keeper: Ah, Dvorak, yes. Ha ha ha, well, you're not going to find one, (laughs). This way!
Dvorak's keeper: (laughs) Yes. Here we are then! Here's Dvorak.
Sam: Jesus... I think I just figured out why you couldn't hack in here Grim.
Grim: Uh... yeah... no kidding.
Sam: What the hell do I do now?
Grim: Uh... hold on while I find a slide rule.
Lambert: See what the old man knows, Fisher.
Sam: OK, if this is Dvorak, who are you?
Dvorak's keeper: Um, I am Dvorak's keeper. Thank you most kindly for asking.
Sam: And what is this, this Dvorak?
Dvorak's keeper: Dvorak is, well, you likely wouldn't understand.
Sam: I'm sure you're right, but let's have it for the record anyway.
Dvorak's keeper: Dvorak is a mechanical representation of a self-referential axiom of number theory. Dvorak encodes its own logical structure within its own executable cycle and recursively derives a more accurate representation of itself with each successive execution.
Sam: Right. Grim... did you get that?
Grim: My god... it's an infinite state machine.
Sam: Fine. What do I do?
Grim: ... if Zherkezhi is using this...
Sam: Grim.
Grim: Sorry. Uh, Sam, we're going to need a copy of Dvorak's output so we can work out the algorithm it's built on.
Sam: How do I get its output?
Grim: It runs on punch cards.
Sam: Punch cards?
Grim: You'll need to restart the sequence and initialize each tower in the right order and then retrieve the output stack.
Sam: How do I know the right sequence?
Grim: You'll need to hit the switches in order as the tubes start to heat up. Ask the old man for help.
Sam: I need your help.
Dvorak's keeper: Indeed. What can I help you with, my good fellow.
Sam: I need you to help me initialize Dvorak so I can retrieve an output stack.
Dvorak's keeper: Ah, Dvorak. Well, that is certainly something I can help with. (laughs) Why don't you start it. I'll initialize the towers on this side, and you can do the other side.(Once Sam has the help of Dvorak's keeper in attempting to initialize Dvorak, Sam starts the sequence.)
(If Sam and the keeper are unsuccessful:)
Dvorak's keeper: Whoopsie, tubes overheated. Seems like we (laughs) missed our cue. Better restart from the top there, chum.
(If Sam and the keeper successfully initialize Dvorak:)
Dvorak's keeper: Aha! There you go, hmhm. Your output stack should be ready. Mhm!
(If Sam makes Dvorak's keeper angry by causing a disruption, the above scenario can no longer be done. In that case:)
Dvorak's keeper: Oh, how terribly rude. Go about your business then.
(further talk:)
Dvorak's keeper: Oh, how terribly rude. Go about your business then. (OR) In all honesty sir, you've been terribly rude, and I prefer not to talk to you.
Dvorak Scenario 2 - Sam initializes the machine on his own[]
(If Sam starts the machine and progresses two of the switches correctly, the following dialogue occurs. This only applies if the objective for retrieving the output was not on the OPSAT at that point.)
Lambert: Fisher, what are you doing?
Sam: I've seen these things before... this is a finite state machine.
Lambert: It is?
Sam: Yeah. Looks like Dvorak is just the encoded innards of a fifty-year-old scrap heap.
Grim: No wonder I couldn't hack into it.
Sam: It doesn't even speak the same language. I'm going to try and reinitialize the machine and retrieve an output stack for analysis.
Grim: Gotcha.
(If Sam killed or knocked out the man, or if Sam made him angry by causing a disruption, then if Sam starts the machine and fails to progress it:)
Sam: Lambert... what the hell is this thing?
Lambert: I don't know Fisher, but I bet that old man would have helped us if...
Sam: Well too late... now what do we do?
Lambert: Grim?
Grim: It looks like a finite state machine... weird academic sixties era university basement crap.
Sam: What should I do?
Grim: You'll need to retrieve an output stack. Restart the machine, then hit the switch on each tower in sequence when the tube heats up. Once you're done, you need to recover the output stack.
(Once the objective for retrieving the output is on the OPSAT, if Sam is unsuccessful in initializing the machine:)
Grim: It looks like the tubes will overheat and reset if you don't initialize the tower fast enough. You'll need to restart the whole sequence over again.
Grim: Too slow. Restart the machine again.
(OR)
Grim: You took too long. You need to initalize each tower before the main tube overheats.
(OR)
Grim: No good. You'll have to try again.(Sam eventually initializes Dvorak and the machine prints an output stack. All scenarios merge here)
Output stack[]
(Once Sam takes the output stack:)
Sam: Alright, I've got the stack.
(the following dialogue only occurs if Grim has not already explained it in Scenario 1 "Talk 4", and only when not on full alert / two civilians killed)
Grim: Fisher... judging by what we just saw, I think that's an infinite state machine... not a finite state machine.
Sam: What's the difference?
Grim: This one is self-referential. Each output stack is a logical instruction set that tells the machine to recurse itself and derive a more accurate set of instructions for the next execution cycle.
Sam: Fascinating. Can I go now?
(the following dialogue depends on whether Sam has completed all his primary objectives)
Lambert: Good work Fisher, complete the rest of your objectives and proceed to extraction.
Sam: On my way.
Lambert: Good work Fisher, time to make yourself scarce. Get to your primary extraction point.
Sam: On my way.(if Sam talks to Dvorak's keeper afterward:)
Dvorak's keeper: Eventually, Dvorak will derive the answer, but "eventually" is a very long time. (OR) Oh, if you see Jiggers, tell him I miss him.
(if Sam knocks out Dvorak's keeper:)
Lambert: Fisher! What the hell are you doing?
Sam: Sorry. I thought he was the enemy.
Lambert: He seemed harmless enough... now you're on your own in there.
Lambert: From now on check your targets.
Sam: Yes sir.(if Sam kills Dvorak's keeper:)
Lambert: Fisher! You just killed an innocent man!
Sam: Sorry. I thought he was the enemy.
Lambert: From now on check your targets.
Sam: Yes sir.Lambert: Fisher! You just killed another innocent. Complete your primary objectives and get out of there. It's too risky to keep you in the field any longer than necessary.
(Once all primary objectives are complete, Sam can exfiltrate through the elevator shaft that can be accessed from the middle floor of the penthouse.)
Mission Complete.
