Overview[]

ParisNice

Fisher infiltrates the train by being deployed from the V-22 Osprey to the top of the moving train.

During his mission in Paris, Sam Fisher identified undercover CIA agent Norman Soth as the leader of a terrorist raid against the Saulnier Cryogenics Lab, where his men murdered the staff and stole a valuable device needed for a larger operation in Indonesia. It was discovered that Soth was traveling to Nice under the alias Jonathan Poindexter via Hesperia Railways. Needing to know if Soth was an Agency asset or not, Third Echelon sends Fisher to infiltrate the train carrying Soth. Sam deploys onto the high-speed train from above with the help of the Osprey. Irving Lambert does not grant Sam the Fifth Freedom, only non-lethal tactics, due to the large number of civilians on board. Sam is also ordered not to alert the mercenaries aboard the train for fear that Soth will leave the train before they can find out if he is a friendly operative.

Sam meeting Norman Soth

Fisher navigates toward the car that Soth is staying in; his path takes him beneath one of the cars, and on the side of the passenger car where some of Soth's mercenaries are currently sitting. When he gets to Soth's car, both Lambert and Dermot Brunton hint that Soth wears a prosthetic - which can be noticed using thermal vision. Fisher searches each of the cabins and eventually locates Soth: one of his legs shows a cooler temperature than the other, revealing his prosthetic. Fisher enters the cabin as Soth is sleeping and wakes him up, asking him if he's undercover, currently working for the agency as an undercover agent. Soth states that he is, and to confirm the story, Fisher asks him who his handler is. Soth replies that Clifton Finch is his handler. Suddenly, a knock on the door from one of Soth's allies tells him that he's got a phone call. Soth tells Fisher to "stay hidden, and don't make a noise".

Fisher uses the Laser Microphone to record the conversation between Soth and Suhadi Sadono.

As Soth exits the cabin, Fisher asks Lambert if he was lying about his handler, and Lambert confirms that he was, and that Finch has been on sick leave. Lambert tells Fisher to hack Soth's laptop and trail him to the bar located in the next car. Fisher does so, and hides in the bar booth, covertly recording the phone conversation between Soth and Suhadi Sadono with the Laser Microphone. It is revealed that to assist Sadono's cause, Soth intends to travel to Jerusalem, Israel as the next plan of operation. Soth, knowing that he was trailed by a US agent, tells Sadono that he can't discuss any more. After the phone call, Soth leaves the car and heads toward the back of the train. With his objectives complete, Fisher attempts to escape the train by heading towards the front, but is notified that his presence is now known by Soth's mercenaries. Fisher asks Lambert what his ROE (Rules of Engagement) are, and Lambert gives him the Fifth Freedom, telling him "it's them or you".

Fisher climbs up a ladder and makes it to the top of the train, but is surprised to find a helicopter flying beside the train and firing down at him from above. Fisher runs toward the back of the train as the V-22 Osprey closes in and begins to open fire on the mercenary helicopter. Fisher jumps onto the rope as the enemy helicopter is damaged, loses control, and crashes in the countryside. With this information, Fisher is set for a course to Jerusalem. Due to the mysterious nature of the incident, the United Nations launches an investigation into what occurred on the train.

Debriefing[]

Intelligence gathered from Soth's laptop referenced a potentially lethal 'Springfield Demonstration', a potential terrorist event intended for an American target. Soth was allowed to continue onwards towards Jerusalem.

Differences[]

  • There are a few cans on the level, but they cannot be used as objects.
  • The door to the engineer's cabin has no glass, so it cannot be seen into, as in the Xbox and PC versions.

  • The version is identical to the PS2 and GameCube versions, but Fisher has a knife.
  • There is a glitch where Soth will find out Fisher is on the train even when the guards are unaware of him, leading to the mission failing. The way to fix it is to not touch the guards in the first passenger car, and instead shimmy along the side of the car.

  • Trivia[]

    • This level is actually fairly short, perhaps one of the shortest levels in the Splinter Cell series. The only main objectives are to talk to Soth and record his phone call with Sadono.
    • In the cutscene where Coen asks Fisher for his opinion on Soth, he replies with "The world is small, nasty and complicated, and everybody dies alone." This is one of Fisher's deep quotes used in Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Echoes. An exact scene shows where he infiltrates the train.
    • This level marks the first appearance of a dog in Pandora Tomorrow. However, this dog does not pose any threat to Fisher. The dog is located in a cage in the baggage car.
    • The interrogation lines with the inspector in one of the back train cars doesn't make sense as he states "He's in this car, cabin eighteen" regarding Soth's location. Another inspector has the same line, this inspector is appropriately place in the same car as Soth.
    • In-game dialogue shows that Soth is meant to say "Saccharine and cloves" right after Fisher says "Ask me about the Chestnut Tree."
      • This is a reference to George Orwell's 1984 novel in which the Chestnut Tree is dive bar filled with telescreens. Saccharine and cloves being what's in the 'Victory Gin' that is served there.
    • Fisher is not allowed to use lethal force until he records Soth's call.
    • The level makes a return in Splinter Cell: Essentials as the first bonus mission.
    • This is the first level in the Splinter Cell series to take place on a train.
    • There are two ways Fisher can move through the first passenger car. He can either flip a switch to disable the lights and slip by, or he can unlock the side doors and shimmy along the side of the car.
      • Turning the light switch on and off repeatedly will cause it to break, thus attracting the attention of the guards.
    • Magazines featuring another Ubisoft franchise on the cover, Prince of Persia, can be found on the train.
    • If the player presses the crouch button while on top of the train, Fisher will be pushed back three feet.
    • If Fisher goes back to the hallway after recording the call and Soth gets his intercept about visitors, Lambert lashes out at him for missing an objective opportunity, and the mission fails.
    • Falling off the train will instantly cause the mission to fail. On the Mission Failed screen, the background will continue to move, while the train and helicopter (except its blades) will be frozen.
