Intro Cutscene and Briefing[]
(Scene near Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. Scene of a hotel shown from above.)
Morris O'Dell: (voice only) As happy as we are to be back online, here in New York, our thoughts turn to our loved ones who are defending us on this beautiful fourth of July.
(the scene cuts to Sam watching TV from a bar inside the hotel)
Morris O'Dell: We go now live to the Yellow Sea where sailors aboard the USS Clarence E Walsh are celebrating.
(the TV cuts to the Walsh where a sailor is present on camera)
Morris O'Dell: We have seaman Anthony Palmera from Brooklyn, New York. Tell us, seaman Palmera, how you'll be celebrating Independence Day.
Palmera: Well, the captain's gonna have a big barbecue on deck, and tonight we'll have our own fireworks.
(Scene cuts to a missile headed for the Walsh. Radar operators pick up the missile and sound the alarm which alerts the sailors on the Walsh. Back in the radar room:)
Captain: Talk to me!
Operator: Captain! All of our command systems are fried. Nothing's responding.
(back at the TV feed)
Morris O'Dell: Seaman Palmera! Can you tell us what's happening there?
(The sailors on the deck start running away. In the radar room, the captain turns but is too late. An explosion hits the ship while the sailors continue running. The explosion eventually engulfs the whole vessel.)
(Inside headquarters. Lambert is walking into a meeting room.)
Lambert: Sit tight, Sam. I'll call you back.
(At the table are Secretary Frank Mason, and President David Bowers.)
Mason: It's the Koreans, Mr. President. I recommend that we declare war immediately.
Lambert: If it was Korea, there would be 200000 men coming over the DMZ right now.
Bowers: Maybe it was an accident. Maybe an exercise, a test launch gone wrong.
Mason: That's impossible. The Koreans can't even detect the Walsh, never mind track it on radar and sink it with a 30-year-old Chinese anti-ship missile.
Lambert: I have reason to believe the ship was crippled with an information warfare attack.
Mason: Not a chance. The Walsh's systems are-
Lambert: Unhackable? The Walsh's EW suite is built on kernels first identified by two of the world's leading computational theorists. One of them was found dead in Peru last week. I'm about to pick up the other one.
(back at the bar where Sam is watching TV)
Morris O'Dell: Ladies and gentleman, I-I'm not sure what we just witnessed here but, I'm afraid something terrible has just occurred.
(Shetland walks up to Sam while smoking a cigar)
Sam: My god.
Shetland: Amazing what they show on TV these days, huh, Sam?
(The TV shows scenes from the Walsh)
Shetland: The world's gone crazy.
Sam: I guess you're in the right business then, Doug.
Shetland: What are you doing here?
Sam: I'm looking for a guy named Milan Nedich. Heard he works for you.
Shetland: Lots of people work for me. Haven't you heard? For a security company to make the Fortune 500, if you're looking for a job...
Sam: I'm not.
Shetland: Is that so? If you keep doing what you're doing, you'll just end up another unknown soldier.
Sam: I'm not in it for the fame. Your buddy Nedich is dirty. Cut him loose.
Shetland: Unlike other employers, I don't cut people loose. If you got evidence against one of my guys, I'll help you bring him in, but I'm not gonna send a man up the river because you say so.
Sam: Fair enough. Just stay out of my way.
Shetland: Thanks for the advice. In case you change your mind...
(Shetland puts down a Displace name card and walks away. Sam places his glass cup over the card.)
Colonel Irving Lambert: Fisher, if I can't throw the Joint Chiefs a bone, we'll be at war in the next twenty-four. I need you to bring in Zherkezhi for questioning. Milan Nedich has moved him to Hokkaido for protection. I have no idea if Shetland is aware or involved, but I'd like to find out. However it turns out, don't let your personal concerns get in the way.
Anna Grimsdottir: In my opinion, there are too many coincidences here. Zherkezhi is the only living person who could have orchestrated the sinking of the Walsh. Even if the Koreans did launch the missile, it would almost certainly have required Zherkezhi's help to actually hit the ship. And this business with Displace... I know you don't want to hear it... but I think Shetland's dirty. The kidnapping of Morgenholt, the protection of Zherkezhi... relocating him after the blackout... it stinks.
William Redding: Looks like Displace rented out the entire retreat. It's low tech and quiet. Don't expect servers and security. Expect aware guards, in tune with the environment. You're going to need to rely on more traditional methods... up close and personal.
Admiral Toshiro Otomo: Japanese I-SDF conducts low level monitoring of the activities of anyone employed by a PMC for as long as they are in the country. We discovered yesterday that Displace has rented this retreat, and a number of our agents planted microphones in the location. Unfortunately, we were not adequately prepared for the increased importance of the location. The microphones are detectable using standard tools. Needless to say, it would be best if Displace did not find them.In-Game[]
(Sam starts near a cliffside leading to the structures.)
Lambert: Fisher, remember. I need you to bring in Zherkezhi alive.
Sam: What about Nedich?
Lambert: Nedich is another story.
Sam: Isolate. Simplify. Complete.
Lambert: We're on the same page?
Sam: Affirmative.
(Sam can interrogate the merc standing on the rocks here. He can only do so when Zherkezhi is still alive.)
Sam: Talk, but talk quietly.
Merc: I'll tell you anything. I'm the biggest coward you've ever met.
Sam: That's quite a claim.
Merc: I've already wet myself.
Sam: Well, then you've made the top ten. Where's Zherkezhi?
Merc: Somewhere at the far end. In the teahouse, maybe.
Sam: All right. I think it's time for you to take a nap then.
Merc: I'm such a coward. You should kill me anyway. I don't deserve to live.
Sam: You are pretty spineless actually.
Merc: I'm so ashamed.
(additional interrogation)
Merc: I can't face myself any longer. (OR) I don't deserve to live.
Civilians killed[]
(Note: If two civilians are killed, the opportunity objective will appear as cancelled on the OPSAT; however, due to a glitch, the objective can be completed normally (with no dialogs cancelled) and will be considered complete at the summary screen. Unlike other missions, there are no dialogues that are different when two civilians are killed.)
Lambert: Dammit Fisher... that's a civilian down. Control yourself.
Sam: It was an accident. I'll be more careful.
Lambert: Fisher, that's another civilian down. This mission is a disaster. Complete your primary objectives and forget about the rest... you've lost your edge.
Sam: Roger.Hokkaido alarms[]
(Note: If four alarms are triggered in the mission, the opportunity objective will appear as cancelled on the OPSAT; however, due to a glitch, the objective can be completed normally (with no dialogs cancelled) and will be considered complete at the summary screen. Some NPC conversations are skipped. Unlike other missions with an alarm system, there are no dialogues that are different on full alert.)
Lambert: Fisher, we're already in hot water. Try and keep it quiet.
Lambert: Discretion is the better part of valor, Fisher...
Lambert: Fisher, I'm serious... keep it quiet or we'll blow the whole op.
Lambert: Black hell, Fisher... the whole place is alerted. Complete your primary objectives and get out of there.
(Hokkaido will be on full alert.)Parking lot[]
(Sam enters a structure and approaches a parking lot. A merc lights a candle and walks out. He eventually talks to another merc who is leaning on a vehicle.)
Merc 1: Five-speed 240 horsepower automatic transmission.
Merc 2: Eight liter turbo diesel V8 with 460 foot-pounds of torque.
Merc 1: Independent front and rear double a-frame suspension on a six-squad steel box section.
Merc 2: Four-wheel drive ABS and torque biasing differential with 40-to-1 gear reduction.
Merc 1: Puncture-resistant 17-inch tires, quarter-inch aluminum rocker panel and steel grid drive train protection.
Merc 2: Windshield-projected infrared night vision heads-up display.
Merc 1: And, a 640-gig MP3 player.
Merc 2: Standard.
Merc 1: No one will ever need more than 640 gigs.
Merc 2: What are you talking about? Mine's almost full.
(Sam can interrogate either guard. Only available if Nedich has not been killed yet.)
Sam: Nice wheels.
Merc: Oh crap.
Sam: Think the trunk is big enough for a body.
Merc: Oh god. I-I'm not sure.
Sam: Tell me where Nedich is or we'll find out.
Merc: I-In the central palace, I think. He's meeting with some of the senior officers.
Sam: Thanks.
(additional interrogation)
Merc: I-I'm just a grunt. (OR) I'm not the one in charge.Alternate objective - Discover the real identity of Milan Nedich[]
(If Sam did not identify Milan Nedich from the previous level, he will need to do so from the license plates in the parking lot here.)
Redding: Sam, use your EEV to scan the license plates on those trucks. I might be able to dig up some info on our friend Nedich.
Sam: I'll give it a shot.
(Sam scans the two license plates)
Redding: Hm... no dice... nothing suspicious about... wait a minute... the Bosnian Barber...
Sam: I already have a barber, but I think he's Italian... that place next to the donut shop...
Redding: The leasing company papers list a dummy corporation created by one Milos Nowak. AKA Milan Nedich. Nowak is a suspected war criminal from the Bosnian conflict. He's known as the Barber of Bosnia because he allegedly scalped some of his prisoners...
Sam: Well I guess he won't be making an appearance in The Hague anytime soon...
Redding: Guess not.
(From the parking lot, Sam enters a nearby area with a roofed walkway. A guard walks on the floorboard making a sound.)
(a guard walks on the floorboard which makes a sound)
Merc 3: Agh, this squeaking is driving me crazy. Sounds like I'm walking on a family of parakeets.
Merc 4: Nightingales. It's called a nightingale floor. Protection against ninjas.
Merc 3: Ninjas? There's no such thing as ninjas.
Merc 4: Oh yeah, back in 2004, that thing in Georgia, I had a contract to help secure this oil rig. We got attacked by a ninja.
Merc 3: You're crazy.
Merc 4: Tell you what. You don't believe me? Why don't we trade places and I'll patrol where the anti-ninja flooring is.
Merc 3: Fine, I'll go guard your post.
Merc 4: Deal.
Merc 3: Hehe. "Watch out for ninjas. Sucker."
Merc 4: They're listening.
(Sam can interrogate Merc 3.)
Sam: Bad news.
Merc 3: Ah, I knew it! I knew there were ninjas here!
Sam: What?
Merc 3: Yeah, you must be a ninja. How else can you sneak up and grab me like that.
Sam: Listen, I don't know what...
Merc 3: Wow, I can't believe it! A real live ninja!
Sam: Listen, I'm gonna kill you if...
Merc 3: Wow! Killed by a ninja! Cool!
(additional interrogation)
Merc 3: Do you have any tetsubishi? (OR) If you have to kill me, do it with your blowpipe.(Sam goes around the corner inside the building to find a merc searching for microphones.)
Merc 5: Microphones. Hah, what a waste of time. Nobody uses hidden microphones to spy on anybody anymore. They use satellites. This is so ridiculous. I feel like an idiot.
(Sam can interrogate this merc.)
Sam: Find anything?
Merc 5: Who are you?
Sam: I'm looking for the same thing you're looking for.
Merc 5: Microphones?
Sam: Yeah. Did you find any?
Merc 5: No.
Sam: Where haven't you looked?
Merc 5: I haven't checked the phones yet.
Sam: Hm, I'll check there.
(additional interrogation)
Merc 5: I'm sorry. I promise I'll stop. (OR) Take the microphones if you want.
[]
(Sam can remove the hidden microphones from the walls in this level. The dialogue depends on the number of microphones retrieved so far.)
Grim: That's the first microphone, Sam. Five more to go.
Sam: I'm on it.
Grim: That's half of Otomo's microphones, Sam.
Sam: Yeah... I'll keep my eyes peeled for the rest.
Grim: That's the last microphone, Fisher. Otomo will be happy.
Sam: Otomo doesn't seem like the happy type.
Grim: Ah... it's just the old samurai zanshin. He's really nice in person.
Sam: Hmm... I've heard people say the same thing about Lambert...
Grim: What does that mean? Lambert's nice...
Sam: How many of his ex-wives have you spoken to?(Sam presses further on towards an area with an indoor coal pit.)
Lambert: Fisher, looks like Displace has kept a small staff on to take care of the retreat.
Sam: Civilians?
Lambert: That's right. Don't let any of them get killed.
Sam: I won't.
(A merc is walking around here. Sam can interrogate him:)
Sam: It's dangerous back here in the dark, alone.
Merc 6: O-Oh god, don't hurt me.
Sam: Tell me something useful and I won't break your arms.
Merc 6: I don't know. I'm new at the company.
Sam: Well I hope they have a good health plan then.
Merc 6: Okay, no wait! Supplies! I heard someone say there were medical supplies in the kitchen.
Sam: Kitchen, huh? Thanks.
(additional interrogation)
Merc 6: Medical supplies. Check the kitchen. (OR) I-I'm new to the company. They don't tell me squat!
(Sam passes an interior garden and comes across some more smercs talking about microphones:)
Merc 7: You find any bugs?
Merc 8: Yeah they're everywhere. I can't get rid of them. It's like a damn insectarium here.
Merc 7: I mean microphones, stupid.
Merc 8: Oh well, I looked a bit but I didn't find any.
Merc 7: A bit? What does that mean? Where did you look?
Merc 8: Um, like, uh, on the table and stuff.
Merc 7: You looked on the table for microphones?
Merc 8: Yeah
Merc 7: Gee, did you find any?
Merc 8: Uh, no.
Merc 7: Agh, never mind. I'll look for them myself.
Merc 8: Okay, well let me know if you need any help.
(the merc looking for microphones can be interrogated with the same dialogue as the first merc who was looking for microphones)
(Sam goes outside to a courtyard. Two mercs are patrolling and a civilian is practicing martial arts.)
Merc 9: Hey Wendell. Have you seen Milan?
Wendell: Milan? Yeah, he just went through here with some of the guys. I think they're in a meeting. Why?
Merc 9: I just heard that Carl was looking for him.
Wendell: Carl? I thought he was looking for microphones.
Merc 9: He is, I guess. But you know Carl.
Wendell: Yeah, good point.
(Sam can interrogate either guard. This interrogation opportunity only occurs if Nedich has not been killed yet.)
Sam: Tell me where I can find Milan Nedich.
Merc: Ow, agh! H-he just went through here. A-a meeting room in a central palace.
Sam: A meeting with who? Zherkezhi?
Merc: That geek? Agh, no. He was just with some of his guys.
Sam: How many guys?
Merc: Three, I think.
Sam: Armed.
Merc: Of course. Milan is always armed.
(additional interrogation)
Merc: I told you where Milan went. (OR) Zherkezhi was with him.Central palace[]
(Sam enters the central palace and comes across Nedich and three mercs in a bathhouse-type room. He approaches and overhears a conversation:)
Merc 11: So we can reschedule this to there.
Merc 12: Yes, right. Ah well, I'm not sure we can do it then.
Merc 11: Yeah, but if he says...
Merc 12: That's true. South Africans.
Merc 11: No no, that's fine. An agreement we can live with. I think we can commit to that.
Merc 12: That'll be fine. What about you. What do you think?
Merc 11: Yes, yeah, no, ..., maybe. We'll see. Well...
Merc 12: Yeah, back to New York. Broker that deal.
(The above conversation repeats until Sam gets closer by entering the vent.)
(Sam has two options. If Sam enters the vent, Nedich will eventually speak with the following conversation. Any of the mercs can be interrogated. Nedich can also be interrogated here. Alternatively, if Sam leaves Nedich alone and continues until Zherkezhi is killed, Nedich will appear in the parking lot and have a different interrogation dialogue.)
Nedich: All right, listen up. That was Doug. He's on his way and he's not happy.
Merc 11: What do you mean? He's on his way here?
Nedich: Our offices got turned over in New York and he's worried about a leak. He's coming up here to... tie up some loose ends.
(Another merc drops some coins.)
Merc 13: Oops. Sorry.
Merc: Good one. They're only yen, not worth anything since the market crash, not even worth the effort to pick 'em up.
Merc 13: A penny saved.
Merc 12: The offices go hit.
Merc 11: By who? The feds?
Merc 12: Who cares about the offices. What's this "tie up loose ends" thing?
Nedich: Not exactly sure, but this thing with the ship, maybe someone's onto us.
Merc 11: But what if-
Nedich: Look, never mind all that. The boss is on his way and things are heating up. We knew that would happen so just stick to the plan, get this place tightened up, and make sure that this little visit goes off without a hitch. Get moving!
(Sam can interrogate any merc)
Sam: Tell me everything you know and you won't die.
Merc: Agh, ow! OK, what do you want to know?
Sam: I don't want to limit your options. Just spill it.
Merc: Uh, Nedich! He's protecting this guy. Zherkezhi, some kind of computer genius.
Sam: I know that already.
Merc: Shetland. Shetland is on his way here.
Sam: Why?
Merc: I-I'm not sure. Nedich and Shetland, it's between them.
Sam: Are Shetland and Nedich in this together, or is Nedich acting alone?
Merc: I don't know. Nedich is nuts. Who knows what he's capable of.
(additional interrogation)
Merc: Be careful. Nedich is crazy. Dangerous. (OR) Talk to Nedich if you want to know more.
(Sam can interrogate Nedich here. If Sam left Nedich alone, Nedich will reappear in the parking lot with a different interrogation dialogue.)
Sam: Shh. Let's not make a scene.
Nedich: Who are you? What do you want?
Sam: I want to know why you're protecting Zherkezhi. How Displace is involved.
Nedich: I won't talk.
Sam: You're gonna make me cut your throat and look for the words inside your neck.
Nedich: Oh god. Please let me go.
Sam: You're not leaving here alive, Nedich, but if you tell me what I want to know, I can make the end a little easier for you.
Nedich: The blackout, w-we needed to keep Zherkezhi safe after the blackout.
Sam: And what about the Walsh?
Nedich: I-I don't know anything about the Walsh. You'll have to ask Shetland.
Sam: Shetland?
Nedich: Yeah, he needed more data from Zherkezhi after the blackouts. But we have everything we...
Sam: Shetland knows what you're up to.
Nedich: Yeah, yeah he's the boss. He gave the order to bring Zherkezhi here.
Sam: Where is he now?
Nedich: He's on his way here now by helicopter.
(additional interrogation)
Nedich: Finish it! Or let me go! (OR) Do it! Or are you a coward?(if Sam kills Nedich here:)
Lambert: That's Nedich out of the picture, but we have a complication. There's a helicopter inbound. Shetland is aboard.
Sam: Doug? Why is he coming here?
Lambert: Either he was coming to see what Nedich is up to, or our assumptions are wrong...
Sam: You still think Shetland's crooked?
Lambert: I still don't know, and that's what bothers me. Find out what Shetland and Zherkezhi are meeting about.
(Sam goes through a vent and through some additional rooms with two mercs and a civilian. He can remove a couple mics here. He goes to another area with stairway and doors and walls made of translucent glass. He can remove the remaining mic in this area.)
(Sam enters a vent near a medkit at the back of this room.)
Lambert: Fisher, satellite imaging shows you're nearing some kind of teahouse.
Sam: Zherkezhi's inside?
Lambert: That's our best guess. Gather as much info as you can before making your move. We might only get one shot at this.
Teahouse[]
(Sam exits the vent to the outside. A teahouse is in the distance, with the shadows of Shetland and Zherkezhi appearing on the lighted walls. A guard is patrolling the teahouse entrance outside. A conversation starts:)
Zherkezhi: Yes, uh, Douglas?
Shetland: What?
Zherkezhi: The Koreans, they... they couldn't have! Douglas, I need to know the truth!
Shetland: The truth, hmph. Did Oppenheimer know the truth? What about Roosevelt? Abe, truth is what we need it to be, and the truth is we did the right thing.
Zherkezhi: W-what do you mean?
Shetland: Proof of concept worked. It was ugly, sure, but it's over now.
Zherkezhi: You mean... you mean there will be peace.
Shetland: Well, peace isn't something that just happens, Abe. It has to be enforced. Just like in the old days. You know, sheriff wears a shield, sure. But he also wears a gun.
Zherkezhi: Gun?
Shetland: That's right.
Zherkezhi: Oh my god.
(Shetland picks up a samurai sword. The shadow is visible on the teahouse wall.)
Shetland: And we can't have that gun falling into the wrong hands, can we now, Abe.
(Zherkezhi turns to see Shetland approaching him with the sword.)
Zherkezhi: What are - what are - NO!
(Shetland kills Zherkezhi with the sword, then runs away while the sound of a helicopter starts up.)
(If Sam causes a disturbance or gets too close to the teahouse:)
Merc: Intruder!
(Shetland shoots Zherkezhi with a gun, then shoots out the lights.)
(After Shetland kills Zherkezhi:)
Lambert: My god Fisher! Don't let Shetland escape!
Sam: Is he a target?
Lambert: He's THE target.
(The guard patrolling the teahouse can be interrogated:)
Sam: Your boss just committed murder.
Merc: Agh! He's the boss.
Sam: Well, I knew being a CEO meant you could defraud your investors, but I didn't realize murder was...
Merc: Hey! Save the guilt trip, tough guy. Whoever you work for has murdered just as many. What gives you the right?
Sam: The people I work for are elected.
Merc: So is Shetland.
Sam: Elected by the people, not just by the shareholders.
Merc: We're traded publicly, nineteen dollars a share. Anyone can get on board.
Sam: There's a big difference between a free country and a nineteen-dollar-a-share country.
Merc: Hmph, "free". Yeah, you go hide behind that idea. As long as the government is sending people like you after its citizens, we'll never be free.
Sam: You're right. Maybe we all deserve the same fate as Zherkezhi.
Merc: Damn right.
Sam: Fine. Let's start with you.
(additional interrogation)
Merc: Y-you're just a pawn. (OR) In Shetland we trust.
(Sam goes through a hole in the wall inside the teahouse, which leads back to the parking lot. As Sam gets closer, the helicopter takes off.)
Lambert: Damn it... he's gone... there was no way you could have stopped him. Complete the rest of them mission. I'll see if we can track him.
(If Nedich is here, Sam can interrogate him for a different dialogue:)
Sam: Where is he going?
Nedich: I don't know.
Sam: Why did he kill Zherkezhi?
Nedich: I don't know. Zherkezhi knows too much.
Sam: Like what? What did he know?
Nedich: About the blackout. About how his algorithms work.
Sam: What about the Walsh? Did Zherkezhi's algorithms have anything to do with the attack on the ship?
Nedich: I don't know! I don't know! I-I just do security!
Sam: Well you didn't do a very good job.
(additional interrogation)
Nedich: Finish it! Or let me go! (OR) Do it! Or are you a coward?
(if Sam kills Nedich here:)
Lambert: That's Nedich out of the picture and there's nothing we could have done to prevent Shetland escaping. Get to extraction.
(Once all primary objectives are complete:)
Redding: That's all your primary objectives Fisher. We can extract you at any time.
Sam: Alright.
(If the player tries to extract without having completed all primary objectives:)
Redding: Sam, we can't extract you until you've completed all your primary objectives.
Sam: Roger.
Mission Complete.
