A fire extinguisher, or simply extinguisher, is an active fire protection device that is used to control or put out small fires, although is not intended for out-of-control fires. Fire extinguishers are usually a hand-held cylindrical shaped pressure vessel that contains an agent that can be used to discharge in order quench a fire.
Gameplay[]
In Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell and Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, fire extinguishers could be shot by the player, emitting the agent from the fire extinguisher into the air (depending on where the puncture the player created is located). The puncture will continue to release the agent until it runs out (which typically only takes several seconds). If any enemies or personnel are caught in the smoke, they will be in a 'stunned' state - they will begin to cough and wave their hand in the air in an attempt to clear the smoke. If they breath enough of the agent in, this will cause them to become knocked out.
In Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and Splinter Cell: Double Agent, fire extinguishers are much more effective than in previous games. Players can create a punctured spot in the extinguisher's container by shooting it with a firearm, creating a burst of smoke to come from the hole. Enemies and personnel caught in the smoke are usually knocked out instantly.
In Splinter Cell: Conviction, fire extinguishers return but serve a more integral part to the game than before. The effects of being shot are also much different compared previous games; when the fire extinguisher is shot by a firearm, the container explodes instead of just releasing smoke. The effects of the explosion are roughly the same as using a frag grenade or proximity mine. Using Mark and Execute, the player can Mark fire extinguishers (along with other targets, if the player has enough marks) in order to chain it into their 'Execute'.
Trivia[]
- In Splinter Cell: Conviction, the fire extinguisher appears in the player's reticle as 'red', indicating it as a potential target for the player to shoot (as well as a potential Mark for Mark and Execute).
